It takes a lot to surprise me, but gotta hand it to Yorgos Lanthimos. Maybe I didn’t always like what I was seeing happen in this trifecta of nastiness, but I surely do appreciate his masterful unpredictability.
I feel as if I’ve been keeping a surprise from you for a very long time. Because, for some crazy reason, this completely delicious treat, which played to raves at film festivals over a year ago, is just hitting theaters and Netflix. It’s been worth the wait.
I’m all for origin stories that make sense intellectually, and this one does. But shouldn’t it make sense emotionally, too? Because for all the impressive parts in this chapter, it just doesn’t feel anywhere near as furiously awesome as its Fury Road predecessor.
This is a movie that loves action. And stunt people. And romantic comedies. This is a movie that just plain loves movies. And resistance, my friends, is futile.
