One of the reasons I appreciate Denis Villeneuve’s take on this science fiction classic might be one of the reasons that would drive science fiction fans crazy. Because as lush as this film looks, its script is also measured, dialogue controlled. You won’t find those lengthy and impeccably detailed narratives that some relish, but make my brain fog. Because this Dune has a lot to say, and makes sure it is accessible to all who are open to it.
Wes Anderson’s love song to journalism may not be 100%, but it sure made me giggle with delight.
The stakes couldn’t be higher for the embattled Roy family. And, for those of us watching safely from afar, the fun couldn’t be sweeter.
Well here’s something a little different: a romantic comedy with a touch of very modern technology and philosophy. And it works.
We have to assume there are reasons why a 91 year old filmmaker would take on a new project. And, after a rather bumpy start, Clint Eastwood slyly lets us know, yes, there are. And those reasons are conveyed with such low key adeptness, they, and the sweet story around them, almost feel like buried treasure.
As nicely staged and well intentioned as it is, I just can’t feel good about this feel good 9/11 musical.
Smart enough to feel almost plausible, fun enough to have me screaming “Get out of that house!”, this one is my kind of thriller, until it isn’t.
Even if it isn’t the most creatively adventurous move, there is room in the world for these Disney trademark vehicles, the kind of retro family entertainments that everybody can pile into the minivan and get a few giggles out of. But, even with this relatively benign ambition and an admittedly top-flight cast, the jungle’s a bungle.
