Oh, I dunno. There’s nothing inherently terrible about this calculated installment of what was originally an inspired treat. But there’s nothing particularly fun or exciting, either. Which leaves us kind of hanging there, suspended in, in this case, literal animation.

Don’t even try to get your bearings in this look back at the legendary tour Bob Dylan led across America in 1975. Scorsese, whose dazzling documentaries have looked at creativity in a pretty linear way, goes full Dylan here. As much as the iconic musician loves to play with expected norms, Scorsese not only allows that, but plays along, making us want to go ‘wow’ and ‘huh?’ at the same time.

What a dismal piece of business this is! While Simon Kinberg’s chapter of the X-Men saga taps a lot of the familiar notes, this barely memorable slog feels obligatory, a weak step toward the new and hopefully more exciting future.
